Academic Program

In the Elementary School, AISD is an International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program (PYP) school.  The IB PYP is an international curriculum framework designed for students aged 3 to 12. It focuses on the total growth of the developing child, encompassing social, physical, emotional and cultural needs in addition to academic development. The PYP believes that students learn best when they explore big ideas from a variety of perspectives. Teachers work collaboratively planning units of study to help students make links across subject areas.

We believe that students learn best by doing. Students are encouraged to share their knowledge and understanding with others and teachers help students build on their current knowledge, rather than assuming that all students are starting at the same place. Students are taught to take risks in their learning and to reflect on their work to learn from their successes as well as their mistakes.

As a school, we use our PreK – Grade 12 standards and benchmarks to create units using the PYP framework. The PYP draws on research and best practice from a range of national systems with a wealth of knowledge and experience from international schools to create a relevant, engaging, challenging and significant educational framework for all children.
